About the Scientific Diving Center
The Scientific Diving Center (SDC) of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg was founded in 2001, emerging from the lecture “Scientific Diving” that had been taught at the TU Freiberg since 1996. The SDC has since established itself as one of the leading scientific diving centers in Europe. The SDC organizes and conducts research and university activities in the diverse areas of underwater research.
Scientific diving comprises the use of scientific working methods at various levels and applications in physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and engineering. All mentioned research fields are part of the profile of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and are actively supported by all faculties of the university.
The course
Module I
The course is separated into lectures in the morning and practical pool training in the afternoon. Topics of the lectures can be adapted to the participants and will be e.g. oceanology, geoscience, hydrothermal systems, submarine volcanism, measuring equipment or photo and video documentation.
At the beginning and at the end of the course a two day dive camp with practical training in freshwater lakes takes place. Scientific under water work like e.g. transect line, documentation, lift bag, measuring devices, sampling and dive planning will be trained. The dives will take place in a fresh water lake.
Module II
The excursion will be a two weeks research project in the marine environment of Croatia from August 31 to September 14, 2019. During the field trip the participants work on a scientific topic. Different working groups offer many topics in the field of e.g. geology, water chemistry, marine biology, microbiology, heat and material transport or photo and video documentation. Own ideas and topics from the participants are very welcome.
