27. September 2023 ǀ Sweco has signed an agreement to acquire Medins Havs och Vattenkonsulter AB, a company specializing in aquatic environment surveys, in response to increasing demand for such expertise in the green transition. 27

In Sweden, Sweco currently has some 60-odd consultants who advise on client projects in aquatic environments. Medins is one of the country’s leading specialists with cutting-edge expertise in surveying aquatic environments.

Enhancing Sweco’s full-service offering through medins acquisition

“Aquatic environment consulting is in growing demand, from private- and public-sector clients, for example in offshore wind power, ports, industry, mines, water and sewage treatment, and transportation infrastructure. We are now welcoming 35 new colleagues, whose expertise will become an important part of Sweco’s full-service offering and we look forward to working together to support clients within sustainable societal development,” says Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson, President of Sweco Sweden.

“Sweco has a strong offering and with Medins’ deep expertise and long experience in aquatic environments, we’ll complement each other. Through a combination of breadth and specialties, we can offer a unique holistic perspective that creates opportunities for clients as well as employees,” says Olof Nilsson, CEO of Medins Havs och Vattenkonsulter.

Medins has an annual turnover of approximately SEK 36 million and has around 35 aquatic environment experts, of whom several are leading in their niche within Sweden. This is the Sweco Group’s tenth acquisition in 2023 and is in line with the acquisition strategy to grow the business by adding key competence that complements the Group’s 21,000 experts.

Medins: Pioneers in Aquatic Environment Surveys

Medins was founded in 1988, with its head office in Mölnlycke. The company has cutting-edge expertise in marine biology (salt water) and limnology (freshwater) and conducts assignments across Sweden for private- and public-sector clients. Medins works with surveys of biology, sediment, marine archaeology, underwater sound, hydrography, underwater filming, sonar mapping, biological laboratory analyses and other inventories in watercourses, lakes and seas.

Tracking blue and fin whale migrations in the Arctic
Tracking blue and fin whale migrations in the Arctic

A decade of acoustic data from the eastern Fram Strait reveals unique seasonal behaviors of blue and fin whales. While blue whales are primarily heard in summer and autumn, sporadic winter vocalizations challenge assumptions about their migration. Fin whales, on the other hand, display remarkable flexibility, vocalizing year-round. As climate change reshapes the Arctic, this research highlights the need for targeted conservation to protect these majestic marine mammals from rising human impacts.

Neue Studie: Flachwasserbereiche treiben Eutrophierung in Klarwasserseen voran
