Accodring to this report, the fur of polar bears is not white, but translucent. It stores bubbles of air that disperse the light and give therefore the impression that its white, like snow.
This zoological oddity has not gone unnoticed for a group of international scientists at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), who have drawn their inspiration precisely from this interesting arrangement in polar bear´s hair coat to develop a nanostructured membrane capable of desalinating water.

Universität Koblenz vergibt Professur an Kenneth Dumack für Aquatische Ökosystemanalyse
Kenneth Dumack wurde zum neuen Professor für Aquatische Ökosystemanalyse an der Universität Koblenz berufen. Die Professur wird durch die Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde (BfG) aus Mitteln des Bundesministeriums für Verkehr (BMV) finanziert, während die inhaltliche Ausgestaltung in der Verantwortung der Universität Koblenz liegt. Die Ernennung erfolgte am 14. Mai 2025.
