July 26, 2022 | A remarkable transformation is underway in the north branch of the Chicago River. Led by Urban Rivers, the Wild Mile is a planned mile-long floating wetland and trail built on the river.
Urban Rivers, a nonprofit created to realize the project, works in partnership with the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development, community groups, corporations and local businesses to ensure thoughtful planning and acceptance of the Wild Mile as a long-term and cherished asset.
Community engagement
Restoring life to the Chicago River goes beyond the plants and wildlife that now have habitat to thrive; a beautiful river lined with lush greenery and public walkways brings life to the community and revitalizes businesses along the river’s edge.
Since the start of the project, school children have been involved in it. As it is a long-time project, the children get to see the changes and the impacts of their work every year.
