Water and its essential role in different social matters

Around 130 representatives from UN-Water Members and Partners took part on the two-day event. Speakers focused on the linkages between the water agenda and the three Rio Conventions on biodiversity, climate change and desertification, all of which are holding Conferences of the Parties (COPs) at the end of 2024.

The newly-appointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water, Retno Marsudi, emphasized in her speech the essential role of water in prosperity and peace. She also highlighted the need for cooperation, collaboration, and innovative financing, and called for high prioritization of water in order to accelerate progress.

Additional agenda items included reports from a variety of UN-Water task forces and updates on World Water Day and World Toilet Day campaigns.
